Writing “Mother, Can You Hear Me?” was a therapeutic experience for me as caregiver for my mother. The readers of the weekly articles found themselves blended into our family. Many found connection with their own caregiving experience…as a group we became community to rally round the beloved parents or spouses we care for.
That journey’s story is part of a feature entitled “From Trials to Triumphs” on the March/April issue of Southern Writers Magazine. I appreciate the editors at my favorite magazine. Each contributor received a gentle note about a bit of cutting to accommodate space. All of the small cutting was done with an amazing style which didn’t take anything from the stories of writers who have endured trials with triumph on the other side. Writers who, of course, had inspiration to write about that experience.
The triumph didn’t come when I first wrote about my caregiving experience. Nor did it come when I survived the caregiving days. Triumph is coming in a few weeks when “Mother, Can You Hear Me?” will be re-published. The most triumphant days of my writing career are just around the corner.
Those of you who have read the stories, I know you will be telling your friend readers who have not had a chance about the new release. Reviewers have found a viewing window into one family’s experiences. Well-blended hard work, dedication, compassion and humor create this new view. Through that blend, a ‘trial’ becomes a triumph on the midst of the caregiving days. Caregivers are called to step up to care for family who suffer from all matter of needs including Alzheimer’s which was our call. Sharing our stories help others find ways to build a LIFE in the midst of serving our family needs. Having a LIFE will turn trial into triumph.
My brother and I loved our mother and willingly took on the care. Writing our stories at the time helped me greatly. Editing the collection gave me even more pleasure in memories of our family’s life. Releasing the collection has revived the memories again…a lovely triumph in my writing career.
